The Northern Beaches Young Writers’ Competition is now in its twelfth year. ‘Spark’ is the seventh e-Book published featuring finalists’ stories. The brief was to include any derivation of the theme word, ‘Spark’ in their entry. From the humorous and joyful to the profoundly moving and poignant; our writers produced stories packed with ‘Spark’. Inspiration was found in sparks of joy, the sparkle of diamonds and fireworks, to the singular terror wrought by the spark of bushfire embers. We travel across this wide, brown land; from indigenous sacred grounds to nineteenth century wash houses; from a Second World War field hospital to a dystopian nation where a child’s imagination is banned. We encounter dragons, a phoenix, bully-battling robotic dogs and jackets with magical powers. We meet a girl who accepts her encroaching blindness with a quiet dignity and an aged care worker who delves deep to find the fading ‘spark’ in an elderly resident. Enjoy this ‘sparkling’ selection of stories.
